This wonderful piece is the work of Portuguese artist Alexandre Farto better known as Vhils and his technique of “creation through destruction” for this year’s Nuart Festival.
The carved portrait is based on one of the first photographs taken of local fishermen at the beginning of the last century. Economy in Stavanger and Norway in general was until recently based on treatment and exports of fish and fish-products and it was only in the 1960s with the exploratory oil-drilling in the North Sea that the situation changed. The mural is, according to the artist both a tribute and a reminder.
