A few weeks ago published Alex Brewer, also known as HENSEa series of photographs of his recent sculptural work.
The new series of untitled works see the artist exploring the use of irregular wooden forms and cinder blocks combined with his signature vivid colours and spontaneous markings.
HENSE sees his public works as contemporary public art and his paintings as contemporary painting. I an interview with Designboom the artist highlights his interest in the relationships of elements, shapes and colours and how these interact with each other as well as the idea of mark making as a form of expression that he likes to focus on.
His works are non-representational and purely abstract, and can be defined as action painting, works that are created in the doing and where the creation process becomes an important part of the final result; “I’m putting focus on the process and use a spontaneous act of painting. I never like to plan out my work. I’ll create preliminary images to get ideas from, but I like to explore things while I’m creating the work.” These few pieces being a clear example of that.
