“The son of PROTAGORAS” is MTO’s latest piece painted for the “Hit the north”, Culture night Belfast in Ireland.
The mural is characteristic of MTO’s work where hyperrealistic painting in black and white with only a few touches of colours is recurrent, not to mention that his murals always refer to something outside the mural itself, giving the every piece a deeper meaning.
A proponent of agnosticism Protagoras wrote: “Concerning the gods, I have no means of knowing whether they exist or not or of what sort they may be, because of the obscurity of the subject, and the brevity of human life.”
MTO draws a parallel between agnosticism (where no sides are taken) and the current Irish conflict between catholics and protestants, between Irish nationalist and unionist.
“The son of PROTAGORAS” is located in the yard of “Northern Ireland War Memorial” on 21 Talbot Street, Belfast, North Ireland.
