soto coppice

‘Cuadrante solar’ and ‘Soto / Sundial + Coppice‘ are Pablo S. Herrerro´s latest project in an abandoned farm in Salamanca, Spain where the overgrown vegetation has been taking over the huge concrete tanks that once served as a fish farm.

According to Pablo S. Herrero there was a small fire at the place a few years ago that mainly burned the base of the trees between the baths and the river. The place has a special significance for the artist who has witnessed and recorded the decay process of the fish farm since 2008, specially from the surrounding nature of the place.

The idea back these series is, according to Herrero, to represent nature within nature allowing the viewer to be surrounded by his/hers own references, because by doing so we become part of it. Shadows are essential for these delicate pieces; they change, moving according to the direction of light.

Intervening the shadows from surrounding plants the artist creates permanent impressions of a specific moment; “nature allows me to give form to a precise moment. The question is how much of that moment I should make evident. What part of the surface I must touch. And if I want to participate of a particular moment I must do it according to my own perception I have of it.” In other words, the intervention is an expression of the perception of a moment experienced by the artist himself, a fleeting moment that becomes permanent through the artist’s intervention of the surface.
Simple and delicate, pieces that talk about time and space, and our perception of it.
