French artist Nelio was recently in Lyon working on this huge project consisting of almost 500m2 of painted walls at the Mermoz subway station.
Restricting his colour palette to cold greens and yellows Nelio covered the entire subway station with his signature imagery, carefully interconnected geometrical shapes that seem to play with two dimensions, accentuating both the flat and depth in the painted surfaces.
His work is rooted in graffiti,  but his influences also include architecture, fine art painting and graphic design. He usually cites the symbols of the ancient Egyptians and the Maya and the influence of “futuristic movements such as Suprematism, Cubism, Dadaism, Surrealism, De Stijl, Bauhaus, Op Art” as references for his work, something that is clearly visible in most of his oeuvre.
