One of my favourite young painters and muralists, Gonzalo Borondo from Spain, was recently in Ukraine where he painted this wonderful interpretation of Saint Sophia’s cathedral for the Mural Social Club festival in Kiev.
Saint Sophia’s cathedral, built in the 11th century, is one of the city’s best known landmarks and the first heritage site in Ukraine to be inscribed on the World Heritage List. Borondo’s mural, which he chose to title “Portals”, depicts a view of the so-called Orante mosaic at the interior of the building being fronted by a beautiful iconostasis dating from the 18th century, also visible in Borondo’s mural.
