German artist Johannes Mundinger was recently in Madrid invited to take part of an exhibition project, in occasion of what he also painted a wall at La Tabacalera.
Housed in an old tobacco factory in the heart of Madrid, “La Tabacalera” is a cultural community center that has often been compared to the former Tacheles in Berlin.
The space was vacated in 2009 after the tobacco company’s privatisation, and repurposed as a popular public space for individual expression, being completely managed and maintained by the local Lavapiés community offering a place where both Madrid citizens and visitors alike can enjoy exhibitions, concerts, free classes, films and events, as well as the shared studios to express themselves artistically.
Johannes Mundingers’s mural is located on the facade of a building housing a soap workshop, “Taller de jabones y buenos olores”. Used to paint at places where nobody cares, empty houses, former army bases or abandoned factories, Johannes Mundinger murals depend on their surroundings and every wall has its patina, its own surface and structure. This makes every mural not only a beautiful, but also highly expressive and unique.
