During the last time, Selina Miles has been developing a new miniseries called “The Wanderers” – premiering on ABC iView in Australia in 2017.

The latest Wanderers episode features artist Guido Van Helten, as he paints seven freight train carriages in the flour milling town of Manildra, 300kms west of Sydney. With a population of 300 people, Manildra represents the quintessential regional Australian farming town.

Titled “Salt of the Earth”, Guido van Helten’s work features portraits of people local to the area, painted from photographs taken by Guido during his interactions with the town. The artwork aims to celebrate the everyday characters of regional Australia. The moving canvas will send these messages across the country, hoping to surprise and pique the interest of it’s viewers, and to cast a light on a facet of Australian culture that is often overlooked.

About the artist
Guido van Helten, hails from Brisbane and now travels the world, working as an artist and large scale muralist. Guido paints striking, realistic portraits, in a unique “watercolour” style. Guido has shown a love for exploration, having taking his work to many challenging or isolated locations, such as Iceland, Svalbard, Ukraine, Chernobyl, and many areas of regional Australia. His Brim Silo project completed in 2015 caused a spike in tourism to a struggling town in regional Victoria. The artwork was nominated for the Sulman prize for 2016, and made national news in Australia, with major coverage on both television and in print media.

The project
The Wanderers will document Guido’s creative process with a 10 minute film. The series is directed by Selina Miles and produced by Drew Macdonald. It profiles six of Australia’s most exciting street artists as they take their work on the road to various locations in and around Australia. This is a series about discovery of self; of new cultures and place; and of Australia’s next generation of contemporary artists.
