REKA is now back in Australia where he recently completed this new mural at the Melbourne Polytechnic as part of the created for the ‘Paint the Polytechnic’ project produced and curated by Juddy Roller with support from the City of Stonnington.
Titled “Kookaburra sits on the old Gum tree”, REKA’s new mural is the first of two that focuses on local Flaura + Fauna. The mural depicts a Kookaburra, a native bird with a peculiar loud call that echoes human laughter, sitting on a gum tree. The tittle of the mural refers to a well-known children’s song written by Marion Sinclair in 1932 (here the karaoke version).
Inspired by pop culture, illustration and cartoons, REKA’s work combines figuration, abstraction and street art techniques, expressing himself through bold colours, dynamic compositions and strong lines. Just like this new piece that almost seems to sing:
Kookaburra sits on the old gum tree,
Merry merry king of the bush is he.
Sing, Kookaburra, Sing, Kookaburra,
Sing your song for me!
The project also counts with the participation of two other all time favourites: Guido van Helten and Sofles, so expect a bit more from me.
