The German duo HERAKUT,consisting of Jasmine Siddiqui (HERA) and Falk Lehmann (AKUT), was recently in Denmark as part of the ‘Out in the Open’ mural project curated by KIRK Gallery for which they painted this new and lovely mural.

Titled “Your Stories make me forget those Prison Bars”, the 50-meter long mural, painted on the Godsbanen rail yards in downtown Aalborg is based on a child’s imagination as she befriends dragons, that take her away to another world.

The mural took three days to complete and the duo were inspired by the surroundings of the mural, the vertical bars on the wall and what is happening in the world in general.

“The wall is divided into long vertical fields. Instead of working against them or trying to hide them, we use them actively in the work. To feel stuck, squeezed in or behind bars leads to many different associations both at the real, mental and imaginary level.”

“Just the other day I read about children getting locked up at Australian camps when wanting to apply for asylum. When you get older working with art for many years you feel an urge to express something of greater meaning beyond yourself.”

Characterised by their narrative style and their ability to lead the viewer into imaginary worlds, HERAKUT creates a wonderful story telling that works as a window into a child’s mind.
